Request and reply on the new approval process with NWCC
At the conclusion of the North West Community Council (NWCC) it was clear that the process approved was not in keeping with HRMs rules around Community Councils. The LWFRA reached out to seek clarity on how to move forward with the next community project request.

Final funding approvals for 2017/18
Please see below the letter submitted to HRM for the process of monitoring LWFRA funding to community groups.
As outlined by HRM Department of Financial Policy and Planning, you will find attached to our letter a brief description of each grant request. In our meeting of February 20, 2018 the LWFRA approved $50,000 in funding to SWEPS Trailway, 1st Riverlake Scouts and LWF Minor Baseball. Our discussions with HRM Department of Financial Policy and Planning indicate that this is sufficient as a report for your purposes.
The Laker: HRM, LWFRA meet to discuss grants program
The Laker chatted with Councillor Steve Streatch, President and Board Member of the LWFRA, Marni Tuttle and Jay Cameron, about the conversation between HRM staff and the LWFRA.
Letter to HRM regarding Area Rate Review
The LWFRA is still working through the intended and unintended consequences of the unilateral changes to the area rate distribution rules made by HRM. It’s important to note that the rules have only changed for our local area rate.
There has been little progress.
There is, however, an update to share. In a meeting attended by Bruce Fisher and Barbara Wilson of HRM Finance, LWFRA board members and Paul Miller, it was agreed that the following letter outlining the challenges with the review and the incorrect information would be added as part of an appendix to the materials from the July 18, 2017 council meeting.
Successful Partnership between Lions Christmas Express & WJCC
Great to see the WJCC extend their season of community activity. With the recent expansion of the building, new flooring, concrete entry way (with no stairs) and mudroom space it was a perfect space for sorting, packing and distributing the holiday packs. The local Girl Guides troop that calls WJCC home was just the beginning of an influx of volunteers new and old.
Congratulations to the Lions Christmas Express on another year of bringing the magic of the holidays to families in our area.
“Overwhelming” turnout for Lions Xmas Express food packing night
Wishing you all the best for the holidays
